Wedding Dress Protest in Lebanon

Wedding DressesLebanon has a law that exonerates a rapist if he marries his victim.  Many Lebanese women have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the law and then abolish it.  In 2016 women wore bandages around their bodies and covered them with wedding dresses in a protest.  In 2017 an art exhibition was set up along the Corniche ocean-front walkway in Beirut.  More than 30 wedding dresses were hung on nooses along a line suspended between palm trees.

Lebanon rape marraige protestOn August 16, 2017 the Lebanese Parliament abolished the marriage loophole in the rape law.  Women celebrated the end of this repressive legislation, marking a victory for creative protest.  Click here for the BBC report about the new legislation.  A few weeks earlier Jordan repealed a similar law–Click here for that report.
