Noella Wiyaala

With her stage name of only Wiyaala, she is an Afro-pop singer from Ghana. She sings in her native language of Sissala, English, and various other Ghanaian languages, often combining them in one song. After a breakout year in 2013 with many music awards, Wiyaala became an ambassador for UNICEF. In that capacity she has addressed issues of child marriage, child poverty, health and sanitation. She has received multiple awards at the All-Africa Music Awards.

Wiyaala has been a powerful voice for women’s rights. She has spoken out against early child marriage, encouraging girls to get an education and make their own choices in life.

In her song “Peace” she sings, “War, war, war, nothing but destruction!”

“Africa” is a song of love for Mama Africa and a song of sorrow for the exploitation that goes on. “Africa, we cry for peace,” Wiyaala sings.

Wiyaala covered “We Are Going” by the Afro-Pop group Osibisa, also from Ghana. It is a powerful song of perseverance and hope. The word “woyaya” in the song means “we keep going,” a challenge and inspiration for anybody on the road of working for justice and peace!
