In February 2020 Ray Schellinger undertook a journey walking with Venezuelan refugees in Colombia. He walked from Palmira to Mondomo, a journey of 100 kilometers, a small section of the 2,000 km trek many refugees take from Colombia and into Peru. We are posting some of Ray’s FB posts from along the way.
On the way up the mountain on Friday, we passed this man’s house as he was tending his exquisite
garden. The group I was walking with complimented him on his work, and thanked him for making our world that much more beautiful.
Before we had walked another 50 meters, Saul and his wife, Lourdes, came running out to the road and called us to come back to his house. They had prepared a pitcher of hot cafe con leche and bread to share with us.
I don’t know if Saul knows how much of a blessing such a simple act of kindness was for my companions and for me. Their path is lonely and hard, and they have felt so much rejection as they walk along it.
One beautiful gesture has the potential to lift hurting hearts and to redeem our faith in human kindness.
If you have the opportunity to do something today, please don’t let it pass by.
