GREEK ORTHODOX BISHOP SAVES JEWS IN WWII

Bishop Chrysostomos courageously saved all the Jews living on the Greek island of Zakynthos during the Nazi occupation in World War II.  When told by the Nazi Governor to present the list of all the Jews to assemble for deportation, the Bishop gave the Governor a list with two names–his and the Mayor’s.  The resulting confusion gave them time to hide all the Jews.  All the Jews of Zakynthos survived, and Bishop Chrysostomos and Mayor Carrer were honored as Righteous Among the Nations at the Vad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem.
